OVERVIEW:
The Foster Grandparent Program sponsored by Westchester Community Opportunity program, Inc. provides volunteer opportunities to low-income seniors.  This program places seniors in academic settings to work with young people throughout the six counties of Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster and Orange.  The project is funded primarily by the Corporation for National and Community Service.  Additional funding is provided by the New York State Office for Aging and Westchester County Department of Senior Programs and Services.

ELIGIBILITY AND ACTIVITIES:
A Foster Grandparent volunteer must be a minimum of 55 years of age and income eligible. They receive a tax free hourly stipend for their 15 to 35 hours of weekly service activities.  The Volunteers are also provided paid vacation and sick leave. As a Foster Grandparent you serve children who need some extra help in the classroom as a tutor and a mentor.  You help children learn to read and discover math while assisting the teacher with a variety of other classroom activities.  Currently there are over 200 seniors serving hundreds of children in numerous Head Start centers, pre-schools, and elementary schools in our WestCOP Foster Grandparent Program.

NATIONALLY:
There are nearly 30,000 Foster Grandparents serving in 341 local projects throughout the United States.  These volunteers provide assistance to more than 284,000 children with special and exceptional needs.  The mission of the Corporation for National and Community Service is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering.
President Obama believes that we as Americans have a responsibility to help our communities and fellow citizens.  He is calling on us to make an enduring commitment to our neighborhoods.

GET INVOLVED:  Share Today and Shape Tomorrow
When you share your love, time and experience, you have the power to help a child who needs you.  Plus, studies show that volunteering helps you live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life.
